False Unicorn Root, (Chamalirium luteum)

Properties and Uses: in large doses it is emetic, and when fresh, sialagogue. In doses of ten or fifteen grains of the Powdered root. Repeated three or four times a day, it has been found beneficial in loss of appetite and for the removal of worms. The plant- will kill cattle feeding on it and the 'decoction, insects, bugs and lice.


Fennel Seed , (Foeniculum vulgare)

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, carminative, galactagogue. Fennel is used for treating gas, acid stomach, colic and cramps. It is often mixed with catnip in tincture form as an aid to colic.


 



Fenugreek Seed ,
 (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

Properties and Uses:
Demulcent, emollient, expectorant. Fenugreek is useful for all mucus conditions of the lungs. It aids digestion and increases milk production in lactating mothers. Recent studies indicate that fenugreek may lower blood cholesterol. The seeds contain diosgenin, a chemical similar to estrogen. It exhibits mild anti-inflammatory effects.
 


Feverfew Herb ,
(Tanacetum parthenium)

Properties and Uses:
Prevents attacks of migraines. In one study of 300 users of feverfew, 72% reported that their headaches were less frequent or painful. Feverfew is also shown to be helpful in alleviating inflammation and discomfort of arthritis. CAUTION: In about 15% of users, a slight side effect is the formation of small sores in the mouth. Increased Vitamin C can eliminate the sores.
 
 

Figwort Herb,  (Scrophularia nodosa)

Properties and Uses: it formerly was employed internally as an alterative and externally as a discutient. Though it has been largely supplanted by laboratory products, this Plant Possesses many valuable and active medicinal Properties. Externally, in the form of fomentation or ointment, it is valuable in bruises, scratches, etc.

 


Five-Finger Fern, (Adiantum pedatum)

Properties and Uses: Expectorant, refrigerant, tonic. A decoction made from the leaves helps to clear up coughs and congetoin due to colds, as well as hoarseness and catarrhal problems. Sometimes a constituent in hair rinses, and related species of the fern have been used since antiquity as a hair tonic.


Five-Finger Fern,  (Cinquefoil herb)

Properties and Uses: Astringent. Like silverweed, five-finger grass makes a good gargle and mouthwash and a good remedy for diarrhea. The powdered root or bark of the root can be used, as well as the leaves. The root bark has also been recommended for stopping nosebleeds and other internal bleeding.

Properties and Uses: Source of linseed oil and linen. Said to be soothing and softening to irritated membranes. Seeds once used for skin and mouth cancers; colds, cough, lung and urinary ailments, fevers; laxative; poulticed (mixed with lime water) to relieve pain of bums, gout, inflammation, rheumatism, boils. Fumitory Herb

Properties and Uses: Cholagogue, diuretic, laxative, stomachic, tonic. Fumitory is used internally primarily for liver and gall-bladder problems. Larger doses act as a laxative and diuretic, but excessive doses can cause diarrhea and stomach ache. For chronic constipation, use fumitory in combination with other appropriate herbs. Take fumitory also for scabies and other skin problems.

Properties and Uses: (Alpinia Galangal) Common Name Catarrh Root. Medicinal Part-The root. Description Galangal is -a native of China. The rhizome cylindrical, branched 2 inches long, about 1/2 inch thick, annulate from leaf sheaths, rust brown in color, inside yellowish, fibrous, with ,many resin cells; odor and taste ginger like. Properties: Galangal is a stimulant and aromatic, somewhat similar to ginger, which will indicate its uses.

Properties and Uses: Anthelmintic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge.

Garlic is for lung and respiratory ailments. It is excellent for both high and low blood pressure, infections, stomach problems and nervous headaches. Garlic has a positive effect on blood sugar levels. Laboratory studies have shown that garlic contains a substance (zallicin) that kills viruses. It provides protection against the common cold, amoebic dysentery and other infectious diseases. As an oil, garlic is used for earaches and congested middle ear problems.

Garlicin is the name brand of garlic, which contains allicin. This supplement offers three popular choices: Garlicin, Regular formula; Garlicin HC, and Garlicin CF. Garlicin HC is garlic combined with herbs, which are often used for the heart. Garlicin CF Formula contains herbs, which are used for colds and flu.
Garlic stimulates the activity of the digestive organs and therefore relieves various problems associated with Poor digestion. Gentian Root

Properties and Uses: Powerful liver tonic, invigorating digestion, good for gout, fever.
 


Geranium Root
Wild,  (Geranium maculatum)

Properties and Uses: Astringent, styptic. Geranium root is a strong astrigent for both internal and external use. Internally, it is helpful against diarrhea and hemorrhage. It also makes a good mouthwash and gargle for sore throat, gum problems, and throat and mouth sores. One tribe of American Indians used a decoction of wild grabe and geranium root as a mouthwash for children who had thrush. The powdered root is an effective blood coagulant and can be used to stop external bleeding.
 


Ginger Root /
(Zingiber officinale)

Properties and Uses: Carminative, diaphoretic, stimulant. Ginger is used for indigestion, gas, morning sickness and nausea. A study reported in the British medical journal Lancet (March 20,1982) showed powdered ginger to be more effective than Dramamine against motion sickness. The researchers recommended that a person take two capsules of powdered gingerroot 15 minutes before boarding a boat, car or plane. They stated that ginger has no known toxic effects at normal consumption levels. Ginger root relieves general indigestion, dispels gas, eases cramping and relieves spasms of the stomach and colon. Oriental studies show that ginger increases immune response and is an excellent remedy for colds and flu. It also reduces cholesterol.
 


Ginkgo Biloba Leaf

Properties and Uses: Vasodilator, antioxidant. Ginkgo dilates blood vessels, and increases circulation and blood flow in the capillaries. It is effective for macular degeneration because of increased blood flow to the eyes. It is useful for weakness of hearing and vision, Clinical studies indicate that patients with inflamed arteries experienced a reduction of pain. They could walk longer and for greater distances. It reduced ringing in the ears of 103 patients. In a group of senile patients, significant improvement was noted after three months of taking ginkgo. It helps prevent premature memory loss.
 


Ginseng

Properties and Uses: Demulcent, panacea, stimulant, stomachic. The Chinese have held ginseng root in almost religious esteem (grounded, in fact, In their most basic, notions of man and existence) as a panacea for all ailments for thousands of years, those roots resembling a human being In shape being the most highly prized. It is considered, especially valuable for, feverish and inflammatory illnesses, for hemorrhage, and for blood diseases Women also take it for everything from normalizing menstruation to easing childbirth. In a general way it is said to promote both, mental and physical vigor; and considering the population of China, who can quarrel with its reputation as an aphrodisiac? In the more prosaic western view ginseng does promote appetite and may be helpful for digestive disturbances. It is mildly stimulating to the central nervous system and to various, glands, accounting perhaps for its reputation as a rejuvenator. A demulcent, it is helpful for cough, colds and various chest Problems.
 

Ginseng (American Root),(Panax quinquefolius)

Properties and Uses: Root considered demulcent, tonic. Research suggests it may increase mental efficiency and physical performance, aid in adapting to high or low temperatures and stress (when taken over an extended period). Ginseng's effect is called "adaptogenic" -- tending to return the body to normal.

CAUTION: Some caution required, large doses are said to raise blood pressure.


Ginseng Root (White Korean), (Panax ginseng)

Properties and Uses: Tonic, adaptogen, stimulant, blood sugar regulator. Korean ginseng is a rejuvenating tonic and is given to those recovering from illnesses. It improves stamina and the ability to concentrate. It has positive effects on diabetes and other blood sugar related diseases. Ginseng increases energy and helps the body resist disease.

CAUTION: Korean ginseng should be used with discretion if suffering from heart disease and high blood pressure. It should not be taken by those with what Chinese medicine calls a "yang constitution." (A person with a yang constitution is usually large in stature, aggressive and forceful and often has a red complexion.)

Properties and Uses: Diaphoretic, diuretic galactagogue. Goat rue is not commonly used today. In the past it has been used for fevers and worms, and was believed to cure bites from poisonous animals. Goldenseal Leaf/Root, (Hydrastis canadensis)

Properties and Uses: Alterative, antibiotic, antiseptic, emmenagogue, stomachic, tonic. Golden seal is a specific for all problems of the mucous membranes and has been found helpful to the digestive system. It affects the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells. While it is rumored to cleanse the system, neither traditional use nor clinical studies support this purpose.

Root traditionally used in tea or tincture to treat inflamed mucous membranes of mouth, throat, digestive system, uterus; also used for jaundice, bronchitis, pharyngitis, gonorrhea. Tea (wash) a folk remedy for eye infections. Contains berberine, an antibacterial that increases bile secretion and acts as an anticonvulsant; experimentally lowers blood pressure, acts as a mild sedative.

CAUTION: Do not use large amounts during pregnancy. When used over a long time, golden seal may interfere with vitamin B absorption. Scientists have disproved rumour that Goldenseal masks morphine in urine tests.



Gotu Kola Herb

Properties and Uses:
Nervine, tonic. This herb improves circulation and is helpful for skin disorders. Recent research indicates that gotu kola has an effect on connective tissue and heating. Gotu Kola is known in India as a longevity herb. It is used for mental fatigue, poor vitality and senility. It relaxes the nervous system and is considered to be a brain food.

Properties and Uses: Appetizer, astringent, digestive, diuretic, pectoral, stimulant, tonic. Ground ivy is helpful in relieving diarrhea and inflammation of mucous membranes, as in colds, sore throat and bronchitis. Snuffling the fresh juice up the nose often helps nasal congestion and headache. It has been used for problems caused by hyperacidity, for catarrhal enteritis, and for liver ailments Ground ivy has also been beneficial in cases of neurasthenia and morbid hysteria; and, made Into a bath additive it is said to be good for sciatica gout, gravel, and stones. The fresh juice may be given to small children, a few drops at a time, for tummy ache. To stimulate appetite and promote digestion, use a decoction of dried herb.

CAUTION: In very large quantities ground ivy can be poisonous.

Properties and Uses: Demulcet. Gum arabic's main effect is to form a protective, soothing coating over inflammations in the respiratory, alimentary, and urinary tracts. In conjunction with various astringents, it is helpful for coughs, sore throat, and catarrh, as well as in cases of diarrhea and dysentery. The sweetened mucilage has sometimes been used to treat the early stages of typhoid fever.



Gymnema Leaf,  (Gymnema sylvestre)

Properties and Uses: Gymnema sylvestre is used in the treatment of obesity and diabetes in Indian medicine. The main activity in gymnema sylvestre is due to the presence of a brittle black, somewhat complex, acidic resin known as gymnemic acid and a gulcoside known as hentriacontane.
 

Hawthorn Berries / (Crataegus oxycanthus)

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, cardiac, sedative, vasodilator. Hawthorn normalizes blood pressure by regulating heart action; extended use will usually lower blood pressure. It is good for heart muscle weakened by age, for inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), for arteriosclerosis, and for nervous heart problems. Experimentally, marrubiin is an expectorant and increases liver bile flow. Volatile oil is an expectorant, acts as a vasodilator. Warning: Plant juice may cause dermatitis.

Properties and Uses: Root used as a condiment Root tea weakly diuretic, antiseptic, and expectorant; used for bronchitis, coughs, bronchial catarrh, calculus (dental plaque). Root poultice used for rheumatism, respiratory congestion. Few things are better at opening the sinuses than too large a bite of pungent horseradish sauce. Science confirms plant is antibiotic against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, pathogenic fungi. Horsetail Grass (Shavegrass),(Equisetum arvense)

Properties and Uses: Genito-urinary astringent, diuretic, lithotriptic, kidney and bladder tonic. Horsetail is good for kidney disorders. It is for enuresis and other irritable symptoms of the urinary system. Horsetail is an excellent source of naturally occurring silica. This helps the body absorb calcium and contributes to healthier hair and nails. It helps build or rebuild strong bones. It is also helpful for symptoms of arthritis. NOTE: Horsetail can be irritating when used in large amounts for prolonged periods (daily for over a month). It works best in small, frequent doses (one to two capsules two or three times daily at mealtimes). People must drink plenty of water when using horsetail.

It also serves to stimulate the flow of milk but should not be used if the breasts or nipples are inflamed. It is useful too for coughs, hoarseness' and bronchitis. Iceland moss is sometimes given for tuberculosis., since it acts to dissolve mucous congestion and also hinders the growth of the tubercle bacillus. The plant makes a nourishing food, but it must be boiled for a long time to make it palatable. CAUTION: Use in excessive doses or for prolonged, periods can cause gastrointestinal irritation and liver problems.

Properties and Uses: Extract or the whole root is used for alcohol addiction. Herb and extract act as a long term tonic, reducing blood pressure. Root starch is similar to corn starch in appearance and texture when powdered, or jagged chunks when whole, and is called "Kudzu" or "Japanese Arrow Root." Antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diuretic, sedative, stimulant, stomachic, tonic. Lavender is normally taken or used in the form of an oil derived. From the flowers by distillation with water. It is used for flatulence, migraine headache, fainting, and dizziness. It also has some antiseptic properties and is useful against putrefactive bacteria in the intestines. Lavender oil also makes a stimulating, tonic embrocation. In the absence of the oil, an infusion of the leaves can be used instead; and a decoction of the leaves is a useful remedy for stomach problems, nausea and vomiting.
A great carminative in cases of nervous indigestion, gas, nausea and, cramping; used as an inhalant to relieve some headaches; in the old days, it was, part of a compound "smelling salts* and makes a good adjunct herb in a soothing syrup for children.

Properties and Uses:
Antispasmodic; stomachic; aromatic. As a tea it is of benefit in the treatment of nausea, indigestion, flatulence, Palpitations, vertigo. Prolonged use or large internal dosage may cause gastric irritation. Parts Used: fresh or dried leaf.

Licorice Root, C/S & Powder (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Properties and Uses: Demulcent, expectorant, laxative, restorative and stimulant to the adrenal glands. Licorice builds the adrenals and induces the production of cortisone and aldosterone. It is one of the best-known herbs for hypoglycemics. Its demulcent and anti-inflammatory qualities makes licorice particularly beneficial for ulcers. It is also effective for liver related problems. Chinese Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) is slightly stronger, and usually appears in cleaned slices.

Caution: Licorice Root should be avoided by people with high blood pressure. It contains natural sugars which may disturb the sugar balance of some diabetics, so it is sometimes processed to remove the sugars, i.e. "Deglycyrrhinated Licorice - DGL."

Life Everlasting Flower, Whole (Helichrysium stoechas)

Properties and Uses:
Astringent. Irritations of the mouth and throat are said to be relieved by chewing the leaves and blossoms. The leaves are also applied to bruises and other local irritations. Very effacious.

Life Root, C/S (Senecio gracilis)

Properties and Uses:
Diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue. Has been used primarily in connection with female complaints such as leucorrhea or suppressed mensturation. In Native American traditions, life root is used mainly to facilitate childbirth and as an abortifacient. It once enjoyed high repute as a so-called female tonic or regulator but has lost much of its standing in modern times.

Lily of the Valley Herb, C/S (Convallaria majalis)

Properties and Uses: The essential oil of this bridal flower is used in perfumes but is so difficult to extract that most products use a chemical substitute. Distilled flower water is an astringent and whitening skin wash called aqua aurea. It also reduces fluid retention heart problems and in China is given as a tonic. The leaves yield a green dye. Was believed to treat gout, to "comfort the heart," and to restore speech and memory (from the head-clearing effect of inhaling the snuff of he roots and flowers). The flowering tops, leaves, and roots are used to regulate and stimulate heartbeat largely by virtue of the convallarin content, which is similar in effect to Foxglove's digitalin, although safer, because convallarin does not accumulate in the body and therefore is less likely to result in an overdose. Lily of the Valley is a potentially poisonous plant and should be given by trained personnel only.

Linden Flower, Powder & Whole (Tilia europaea)

Properties and Uses: Arterial support, nervine, aids migraine.
Flowers: antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic. Bark: Cholagogue, emollient. Recent studies show Linden tea helps prevent childhood ear infections. Part Used: Flowers and keels. Leaves are an adulterant - the useful parts are the blossoms and the "keels," which are the green, leaf-like protruberances that many people mistakenly call leaves.

An infusion of fresh linden flowers is useful for colds, sore throat, and influenza, and also for mild bladder and kidney problems; but it is not to be used for long periods or heart damage may result. The infusion can also be used as a mouthwash and gargle. For external use, beat the inner bark until its mucilaginous content can be squeezed out and apply this to wounds, sores, and skin problems and blemishes. In the past, the charcoal from- linden wood was sometimes used externally for wounds and internally for halitosis, spasmodic cough, night sweats, and fever.


Liverwort Herb, C/S (Hepatica americana)

Properties and Uses: Liverwort is a mild, mucilaginous astringent, and is freely used as an infusion in conditions such as coughs due to colds. It is also a common ingredient in liver tonics.

Diuretic; pectoral. Hepatica tea has been used for bronchitis, liver congestion, gallbladder problems, and kidney and' bladder ailments. It Is also said to stop gastric hemorrhage and vomiting of blood. The fresh Plant is irritating to the skin and should not be used on wounds. CAUTION: Large doses can produce symptoms of poisoning.


Lobelia Herb, C/S & Powder (Lobelia inflata)

Properties and Uses: in moderate doses lobelia will relax the lungs and dilate bronchioles; in overdoses it paralyzes the cerebrospinal centers and will cause nausea and a drop in blood pressure; in reasonable doses it is an anti-spasmodic and finds service in bronchial asthma.

Antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, nervine. In the past, lobelia was used particularly for its antispasmodic qualities to treat asthma and whooping cough, and also to induce vomiting. Externally, the plant can be made Into a poultice for bruises, insect bites, sprains, felons, ringworm, erysipelas, and poison ivy irritation, CAUTION: Although some herbal practitioners have sworn by lobelia as a harmless but effective panacea for what ails man, overdoses from homemade medicinal preparations have resulted In poisoning.


Lomatium Root, C/S (Lomatium dissectum)

Properties and Uses:
Antiviral to respiratory infections, being of service in sore throat and congestion.

Lovage Herb/Root, C/S (Ligusticum levisticum)

Properties and Uses: Carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic. Lovage is mostly used for its diuretic properties in cases of water retention and urinary difficulties. In excessive doses, however, it can cause kidney damage and it should not be used by those with kidney problems. Lovage also makes a good remedy for. digestive difficulties, gastric catarrh, and flatulence. Skin problems will sometimes respond to a decoction added to bath water. Lovage promotes the onset of menstruation and should not be used by pregnant women.


Love in the Mist Seed, Whole (Nigella sativa)

Properties and Uses: Also called "Black Seed" and "Black Cumin." Seeds have a peppery taste, and are Popular in India, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey. Fresh or dry roasted Nigella seeds flavor curries, vegetables and pulses. In India, they are used to repel insects from clothes and are given to treat intestinal worms and nerve defects to reduce flatulence, induce sweating, and stimulate breast milk. Remarks the warm ground seed was once used in sweet powders and sniffed to restore a lost sense of smell.


Lungwort Leaf, C/S (Pulmonaria officinalis)

Properties and Uses: Herb is an astringent, demulcent, emollient, and expectorant. Lungwort tea is used for diarrhea, hemorrhoids, respiratory problems, coughs, and hoarseness. Also has mildly diuretic properties. The decoction may be beneficial for mild lung problems. Externally the plant is used for all kinds of wounds.
